AbstractThe types and sources of financial assistance provided to undergraduate students by their institutions during 1976-77 were investigated as part of a survey conducted by the American Council on Education (ACE). A sample of 760 colleges and universities that comprise ACE's Higher Education Panel were asked to report the amounts and kinds of institutionally-funded aid provided to undergraduates. This encompassed all aid from private sources distributed exclusively by the institution. Public institutions included their state or local appropriations earmarked for student aid at the institutional or system level. The survey results indicate that during 1976-77 undergraduate students received more than $5.1 billion of their own funds to aid undergraduate students. Of this institutional assistance, 56 percent was provided as grants or scholarships, 36 percent as wages for student employment, and 8 percent as loans. More than 2 million students received some form of assistance from their institutions, averaging $454 in the public sector and $1,366 in the private sector per aided undergraduate. For 600,000 undergraduates, their institutions were the only providers of financial aid. Data are tabulated by the type and source of student aid, dependent undergraduate family incomes, and institution type. The survey instrument is appended. (BH)
